Responsive Web Design & Why You Should be Using it

Responsive Web Design & Why You Should be Using it

Creating or redesigning your website may seem pretty straightforward at first, however, you'll need that site to be compatible with not only your desktop, but also your iphone, your ipad, your Blackberry, your Kindle; the list goes on for us modern technology vultures.

Enter Responsive Web Design.

Responsive web design is essentially an approach whereby the design and development of a website responds automatically to its platform in regards to appropriate image size, resolution and scripting abilities. And let's face it, there's nothing more annoying than scrolling through a website on a smartphone or tablet to find a scrapheap of images and text piled on top of one another!

In previous years this problem was overcome by creating a custom site for each group of users (PC, mobile, tablet etc.) however, this original method has quickly been replaced by responsive web design, a much more fluid and stable alternative. On behalf of web developers and designers this practice requires intelligent use of CSS coding, flexible grids, layouts and images to ensure all components adapt and adjust for optimal user viewing.

Green17 now incorporate responsive web design into all of our projects, as standard.

Here are some of the reasons why we believe in the future of this modern approach to design...

User Experience is Key

Providing an excellent user experience should be of prime importance when thinking about redesigning your website. You'll need a site which will not only provide all the information your audience may require, but also a visually enticing look and feel to ensure end user satisfaction. Responsive web design works to intelligently re-proportion and rearrange elements of the original site to fit the given device being used to access your new website.

Based on Green17's recent statistics, mobile internet usage is steadily rising and has already over taken desktop for the majority of our clients. In light of this, we strongly believe it is more important than ever to make sure your site is mobile-friendly.

Google prefer it for SEO

The search engine giant has stamped its approval on responsive sites, stating that it is more convenient for them to pick up information for search engine optimisation (SEO) purposes. Hence, making sure your site is responsive will ensure you can perform better in online searches. Google accounts for a whopping 88.6% of all searches in the UK, therefore in the world of web design we must all remember that what the Boss says, goes!

Your website will adapt to future devices

One of the main selling points of responsive web design, in our opinion, is that it responds directly according to screen size, meaning that theoretically these responsive sites will translate onto any device. In order to make the best use of each new screen size, however, Green17 will often implement a few tweaks and changes to accurately tailor the user experience for our clients and their respective customers.

With the speed at which technology is moving in this decade it is impossible to predict what new products will be developed in the coming years for surfing the web. Responsive web design is an effective way to help “future-proof” your website, in a sense.
